How to download Google Docs in older Office formats

Do you have a workplace or have to communicate with one that is still using an older format of Microsoft Office from 1997-2003? Well, if you spend a lot of time writing, sharing, or collaborating on documents through Google Docs, you're probably aware that Google has discontinued support for these older formats.
You could try to encourage your workplace to upgrade its software, but that's probably not the most realistic or speedy option. Thankfully, there are a few options for dealing with this formatting change.

Option 1

Save your documents in any format and use an online converter. Here are a few of the Web sites that will convert documents for free: http://www.online-convert.com/, http://www.zamzar.com/, or http://www.mediaconverter.org/. However, if you're dealing with more sensitive information, this might not be the best option for you or your company.

Option 2

Install the Office Compatibility Pack on the target machines. Using this software from Microsoft will allow opening and editing of files in newer formats through the older versions of the software.

Option 3

Sneak your Google Docs off the Web in those older formats. E-mail a document from the Google Docs account to yourself as an e-mail attachment, and choose the format you want. This can be done by clicking the the File option on the menu and then choosing Email as attachment. You'll be able to select the desired format from a drop-down menu.
Chances are the online conversion tools will be around for a long time, but there will probably be a lifespan on the compatibility pack and e-mail trick. Really, your best option is to move away from older software, but in the meantime, we hope these tips will help you out.

Reader tip: If the people receiving or working with the documents don't mind a little change, and are on a budget, why not try one of the free Office replacements like OpenOffice or IBM Lotus Symphony. These support the newer formats, but will also likely require a little bit of practice when learning where all the document formatting and other options are located.

MEEP! tablet for kids now available

If product releases are anything to go by, it seems that almost every child is going to be getting a tablet computer for Christmas this year. There's the VTech InnoTab 2, the Leappad 2, the Toys"R"Us Tabeo, and that's before you consider the myriad of child-centric add-ons for iPads. Also jostling for position on your little one's Christmas list is the newly released Android-toting MEEP! from Oregon Scientific.

When the MEEP! was announced back in February, we knew it was going to run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), feature a rugged silicone sleeve and be Wi-Fi-enabled. Now that it's been released, we can fill in a few of the technical blanks and also see how Oregon Scientific is dealing with the all-important issue of parental controls. Aimed at kids aged six years and above, the device boasts a recessed 7-inch zForce touch screen (800 x 480 pixels) which won’t shatter when dropped. It's powered by a 1.0GHz Cortex A8 processor with 512MB RAM, features 4 GB of internal storage along with an SD card slot, and has a 0.3 MP camera for taking photos and videos. While it's running Android 4.0, the MEEP! has been given a simplified menu system, with kids scrolling to navigate through their apps, games, books and multimedia content. Pre-loaded content includes Angry Birds, UNO, Toon Goggles, along with various educational art and learning apps A cloud-based "Parents Portal" on MEEP Tablet.com means parents don't need to pry the tablet out of their child's hands to change settings and controls. They can remotely set what websites kids can access, or add words to a “bad word” list which stops them being used in chats or searched for. Parents can also monitor their child’s online activity, limit play time duration and set a "virtual allowance" – in the form of MEEP! coins – for their child to spend on content from the MEEP! Store. All of the paid or free games, books, videos and apps in the store have been cleared for kid-friendliness by Oregon Scientific. Content which can be installed isn't limited to MEEP! Store offerings, however. Google Play can also be accessed, but only from the Parents Portal, meaning that parental permission is needed before downloading. Accessories available for the MEEP! include music-oriented add-ons such as a portable piano, drum pad, headphones and microphone, and game-focused items such as a joystick, steering wheel or the double play Game-Pro Case. The MEEP! is available now for US$150.

How to add almost any gift card to Passbook

Do a quick search on Twitter and you'll find many iOS users sending request after request (or in some cases, demand after demand) to retailers, airlines, and merchants for Passbook integration. Passbook is clearly one feature iOS users are eager to use, but the delay in adoption is driving them mad.

Enter Gyft. Gyft is a gift card app for iOS that allows you to store gift card information in a single, easy-to-access place. Sound familiar? As TechCrunch pointed out this morning, Gyft received a big update last night, bringing with it the ability to add any gift card stored in your Gyft account to Passbook. There are over 200 retailers supported by Gyft, ranging from Amazon to Zappos. You'll need to add the gift card to Gyft before you can add it to Passbook. It is a little redundant, but for people dying to use Passbook, this is the most straightforward option. Don't have a gift card to add right now? Sephora is currently offering a free $5 gift card through the app, giving you the chance for a practice run of getting a gift card from Gyft to Passbook.

Once you've added a card to Gyft, view details for it and then tap on the Add to Passbook button. You'll then be prompted to review and add it. Gyft has plenty of features beyond Passbook integration. You can purchase and send gift cards from directly within the app, as well as keep tabs on the current balance for most supported vendors
