Google Inc’s  most senior executive in Brazil was questioned by police and released on Wednesday after the company failed to take down a YouTube video attacking a mayoral candidate in alleged violation of electoral law.

Google is appealing the charges against Fábio José Silva Coelho, who was brought in by federal police in São Paulo and released after he agreed to cooperate with the case, according to a police statement.

“Google is providing clarification to legal authorities,” a spokesman for the company in São Paulo said on
Wednesday.

The questioning came a day after a state court in São Paulo banned an online video that sparked violent protests across the Muslim world, giving Google 10 days to pull the video from its YouTube unit. Google has not been formally notified about that case, according to a spokesman for the company.

Taken together, the legal scrutiny represents the strongest pressure Google has yet faced in Brazil to control third-party content uploaded to its websites and the first time its senior executives have come under such intense fire.

Rather than reflecting a coherent national policy, however, the cases illustrate how aggrieved citizens can get a sympathetic hearing from local judges with extensive procedural powers.

ALLEGED PATERNITY SUIT

Coelho was questioned over a case filed in the western state of Mato Grosso do Sul, where a regional electoral court ruled that the executive was at fault for the company’s failure to take down online videos in violation of a stringent 1965 Electoral Code. [ID:nL1E8KPLW5]

Brazilian electoral law bans campaign ads that “offend the dignity or decorum” of a candidate. The video in question claimed that a mayoral candidate demanded his lover get an abortion, publicizing the details of an alleged paternity suit.

“Google is appealing the decision that ordered the removal of the video on YouTube because, as a platform, Google is not responsible for the content posted to its site,” the company said through a spokesman in Brazil on Tuesday.

Even if Google is not at fault for the publication of such a video, the company may be held responsible for not removing content declared by illegal by a judge, according to Leonardo Palhares, a lawyer specializing in internet law at Almeida Advogados in São Paulo.

Federal police said the crime of disobeying a judge’s ruling under the Electoral Code can carry a sentence of up to one year in prison.

The ruling follows a similar decision by another electoral judge in the northeastern state of Paraiba, which also held a senior Google executive responsible for videos in violation of elections law. That decision was overturned last week.

Brazil also entered a broader international debate this week about an inflammatory YouTube video depicting the Prophet Mohammad as a womanizer, fool and child abuser, when a state court in Sao Paulo ordered Google to take down the video.

World leaders have decried the video, which set off a string of violent protests in the Muslim world, including attacks on U.S. embassies in Egypt, Libya and Yemen. Several Muslim leaders called for international action to outlaw acts of blasphemy.

When President Barack Obama addressed the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, he repeated his condemnations of the video as “crude and disgusting” but defended the importance of free speech in the United States and throughout the world.

Ruling on a lawsuit by Brazil’s National Islamic Union, São Paulo Judge Gilson Delgado Miranda gave Google 10 days to remove the video. In his decision, Miranda said he weighed freedom of expression against the need to protect against action that might incite religious discrimination.

A California judge ruled last week that the video could stay on YouTube despite a request to have it taken down by an actress appearing in the clip. She argued that she was duped into taking part and had since received death threats. [ID:nL1E8KK91B]

1. On your Android phone, go to your Contacts. Tap the menu button and tap Import/Export. Tap Export to Storage, select the contact data you want to transfer (in most cases, "Phone"), and select OK.

2. Connect your Android to your PC via USB and put your phone in Disk Drive mode. Your phone will appear as a drive (or two drives if you have an SD card) in My Computer or on your Mac desktop.

3. Create a new folder on your desktop and name it something like "Android data." Now, sift through the files on your Android drive(s) and drag and drop the content you want to transfer to your iPhone. This might include photos, music, and videos. NASA to build manned space station beyond the Moon?

After forty years of venturing no farther than low Earth orbit, NASA may have decided to establish a manned outpost at a greater distance than humanity has ever traveled before. According to documents seen by the Orlando Sentinel, NASA has chosen a proposal to build a space station beyond the Moon that will act as a “gateway spacecraft” to explore the Moon, the asteroids and eventually as a staging post to launch a manned mission to Mars.

The documents refer to a project that NASA Chief Charlie Bolden briefed the White House on earlier this month. They describe a deep space habitat that would be built at Earth-Moon Lagrange 2 (EML-2) – a point in space 38,000 miles (61,000 km) on the far side of the Moon and 277,000 miles (446,000 km) from Earth. The outpost wouldn’t orbit the Moon. Instead, at EML-2 the gravitational and centrifugal forces of the Earth and Moon balance out and an object placed there will remain suspended like one of those desktop novelty floating globes. The EML-2 station might be built from parts of the International Space Station (ISS) and include a Russian module and Italian components. NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS), scheduled to fly in 2017, would be used to send the components to EML-2 in 2019, as well as the Orion spacecraft, which would ferry cargo and crew to the outpost. 

Missions for the EML-2 station would include exploration of the asteroids, robotic trips to the Moon with the first sample returns by 2022, and a manned mission to Mars. The Sentinel quotes the documents as stating that placing a "spacecraft at the Earth-Moon Lagrange point beyond the moon as a test area for human access to deep space is the best near-term option to develop required flight experience and mitigate risk.” The price of the program isn’t mentioned and this might be a stumbling block for administration support during a time of tight budgets. The White House did not respond to the Orlando Sentinel’s request for comment, and a NASA statement was noncommittal about the outpost. All this sounds very similar to the 2011 Global Exploration Roadmap drawn up by the International Space Exploration Coordination Group (ISECG), a consortium made up of the ISS partner nations.

 It outlines possible missions for the next 25 years that could be made possible by extending the service life of the ISS beyond 2020 This report outlined two paths, one called Asteroid Next, which describes the steps needed to explore near-Earth asteroids and Moon Next, which outlines a manned return to the Moon. 

The EML-2 station appears to be derived from the Asteroid Next path. Whether this is actually the case or not remains to be seen, but the general description from the Sentinel and the Roadmap’s more detailed treatment show no major variations. If the EML-2 station is approved, it will involve more challenges than the merely monetary. EML-2 lies far outside the Earth’s Van Allen belts and would therefore be vulnerable to high levels of radiation, which would require robust shielding and detection equipment. The Orion spacecraft would also have to be built to withstand reentry speed not encountered since the return of Apollo 17 in 1972. 

Because of the distance and travel times to and from Earth measuring in days, systems would need to be heavily automated and built to an unprecedented degree of reliability. Furthermore, new techniques for the long-term storage and management of cryogenic fluids would need to be developed as well as acquiring operational knowledge that is beyond anything needed in manned space exploration to date. Until officially verified, the EML-2 station still remains only one possible future for the American space program, but if it does come about, the final frontier will have expanded enormously.

CHEESY POTATOES AND HAM

I first tasted Cheesy Potatoes and Ham at the Honey Baked Ham store last month. We always buy our Christmas ham at this store. I know it is expensive but it is well-worth it in my opinion. Every Christmas season, they give out samples of all the side dishes and desserts and this dish was one of them.

 I loved it but I don't want to buy it and spend more so I decided to look online for a similar recipe and found this. I followed the recipe the first time and found it a little dry for my preference so I made more gravy the second time I cooked this and it was perfect.

I highly recommend this potato casserole if you are tired of the usual mashed, scalloped or roasted potatoes to accompany your entree. 

1/2 medium onion, chopped
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup flour 1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 1/2 cups milk
2 cups shredded cheese
1/2 lb ham, diced
6 cups diced cooked potatoes

1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (optional) 

Preheat oven to 350. Begin by chopping the onion and parsley and cubing the potatoes. Saute the onion in butter until it is tender but not browned. Blend in the flour, salt, and pepper. Cook for a few minutes to get rid of the raw flour taste. Now gradually add the milk. 

Cook, stirring constantly until the mixture is thickened. Add 1 1/2 cups of the cheese and stir until melted. Add the ham, potatoes and parsley. Stir well to combine, being careful not to break up the potatoes too much. Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish. Top with the remaining cheese. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes
